Basic NAVAIDS and Lighting

Introduction

This course provides a practical and theoretical introduction to aviation navigation aids used in civil aviation operations. The training covers the operating principles, applications, limitations, and operational use of conventional and modern navigation systems. The course is designed to help trainees understand how aircraft navigate, how ground-based navigation systems operate, and how these systems integrate with airport and air traffic infrastructure.

Objectives

At the end of the course, the participants should be able to:

  • Explain the fundamental principles of air navigation and the role of navigation aids in aviation operations.
  • Appreciate the application of radio wave in Aircraft Navigation systems i.e.
  1. ILS &VOR &DME &NDB and ADF
  • Navigation system is set of equipment designed to assist or automate navigation in an aircraft.
  • Radio Navigation Systems (NAVAIDS) are used to provide flying aircrafts with automatic navigation information such as distance, direction, bearing, position and landing angles
  • The ability of the aircraft to navigate the air space expeditiously and safely by conforming to flight rules without fear of getting lost depends on NAVAIDS
  • Radio NAVAIDS come in handy in low visibility conditions and act as a suitable backup method for general aviation pilots that prefer dead reckoning.
  • They are also more precise. Volume I of Annex 10 contains Standards and Recommended Practices and guidance material for;
  1. Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) Navigation Aids such as;
  2. Instrument Landing System (ILS)
  3. Microwave Landing System (MLS)
  4. VHF omnidirectional radio range (VOR)
  5. Non-directional Radio Beacon (NDB)
  6. Distance Measuring Equipment (DME
