Precision Approach Path Indicator (PAPI) and Constant Current Regulator (CCR) Course

Introduction

Modern airports rely on highly reliable Airfield Ground Lighting (AGL) systems to ensure safe aircraft operations during day, night, and low-visibility conditions.

Two of the most critical elements of these systems are the Constant Current Regulator (CCR), which supplies stable current to the series lighting circuits, and the Precision Approach Path Indicator (PAPI), which provides pilots with accurate visual glide path guidance during final approach.

This course provides participants with a comprehensive understanding of the design, operation, installation, testing, maintenance, troubleshooting, and safety requirements of CCR and PAPI systems in accordance with ICAO Standards.

Through theoretical instruction and practical examples, participants will gain the knowledge and skills required to maintain reliable airport lighting systems that support safe aircraft operations.

Objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Explain the role of CCR and PAPI within an Airfield Ground Lighting (AGL) system.
  2. Describe ICAO standards governing CCR and PAPI systems.
  3. Identify the components and construction of Constant Current Regulators.
  4. Explain CCR operating principles and brightness control.
  5. Understand series circuit operation and isolation transformer functions.
  6. Describe different types of CCRs and their applications.
  7. Perform routine inspection and preventive maintenance of CCR equipment.
  8. Diagnoses and troubleshoot common CCR faults.
  9. Explain the operating principles and optical characteristics of PAPI.
  10. Identify all major PAPI components and their functions.
  11. Perform PAPI siting calculations in accordance with ICAO guidance.
  12. Calculate the PAPI distance (D) from the runway threshold and understand the design process.
  13. Install, align, and calibrate PAPI units correctly.
  14. Conduct photometric and operational inspections of PAPI systems.
  15. Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on PAPI equipment.
  16. Apply electrical safety procedures and airport operational safety requirements during maintenance activities.
  17. Interpret maintenance records, inspection reports, and troubleshooting data.
  18. Apply best practices to improve the reliability and availability of airport visual aid systems.
