Safety Management System (SMS)

Introduction

Participants will obtain basic knowledge and skills for promoting, implementing a safety management system.

Objectives

The course will assist the participants to develop abilities to:

• Identify the key concepts of ICAO approach to SMS
• Identify how SMS are being effectively applied in service providers
• Explain the needs for and benefits of SMS
• Outline the philosophy of safety management
• Get management’s and the workforce’s support and involvement a ‘safety case’ of an  SMS
• Identify the key personnel in SMS implementation and their roles
• Describe the basic elements of a safety management system
• Apply a SMS gap analysis process (compare what we have with what we should have)
• Apply principles of hazard identification and risk management
• Develop and run safety committees and action groups
• Take into account human and organizational factors in SMS Implementation
• Promote a positive safety culture
• Develop training and awareness strategies

Prerequisite

• All lines management (Managers including CEO),
• operation personnel (pilots, cabin and engineer, air traffic controllers and airport technical personnel ) to obtain basic knowledge and skills for promoting, implementing a safety management system.
• And who wish to obtain an understanding of the implementation of SMS and their role in this process
