Fatigue Risk Management Training Course
Introduction
- Fatigue management refers to the methods by which aviation service providers and operational personnel address the safety implications of fatigue. In general, ICAO Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs) in various Annexes support two distinct methods for managing fatigue: a prescriptive approach and a performance‐based approach.
Fatigue Risk Management System (FRMS) is defined as:
- A data-driven means of continuously monitoring and managing fatigue-related safety risks, based upon scientific principles and knowledge as well as operational experience that aims to ensure relevant personnel are performing at adequate levels of alertness.
Objectives
FRMS oversight requires a move from checking compliance with prescribed limits and associated regulations to assessing
how well the FRMS processes work separately and interactively. At the end of this course the trainees will be able to:
- Demonstrate specific knowledge of fatigue management scientific principles.
- Analyze the relevant research and outline the operational implications of the findings;
- Interpret analyses of data and know when to access expert input;
- Assess safety cases and make risk assessments;
- Assess the appropriateness of different fatigue‐related mitigations within specific operational contexts;
- Describe the difference between the managing of fatigue risks using an SMS and using an FRMS;
- Understand the proper use and detect the improper use of bio‐mathematical models if used within an FRMS.
