Area Surveillance Control ICAO CODE 054
Introduction
- This course gives students from non-European Air Navigation Service Providers the knowledge and skills they need to work as Air Traffic Controllers in an Area Control Radar environment. The course can also serve as further Rating training for Air Traffic Controllers who have been active for several years. Students who pass the course may apply for an ICAO Area Control Radar student air traffic controller license.
Objectives
After completion of this course, the students:
- Have knowledge and understanding in accordance with the topics and sub-topics detailed in ICAO Annex 1.
- Have skills to perform Area Control Radar Service in an area control environment safely, expeditiously, orderly and according to rules and regulations.
- Have knowledge of the importance of teamwork and of human factors related issues that can affect personal and team performance.
Practical Training Structure:
- Prepare Arrival and Departure progress strips using approved abbreviations and symbols.
Airspace familiarization:
- Area of responsibility and the frequencies.
- Coordination with APP Control Units and ACCs og the adjacent FIRs
- Deemed separation.
- Strip Holder Management.
- Practice Vertical separation for Arriving and Departing en rout and TMA traffic and the Holding Pattern.
- Practice longitudinal separation for Arriving and Departing en rout and TMA traffic and the Holding Pattern.
- Practice Lateral separation for Arriving and Departing en rout and TMA traffic and the Holding Pattern.
- Practice coordination procedures with APP Control Units and ACC Units in the adjacent FIRs for Arriving and Departing aircraft.
- Apply types of separation between Arriving, Departing and holding aircraft.
- Apply types of separation for Arriving and Departing aircraft in case of holding.
- Dealing with different Emergency Cases within the area of responsibility

- Air Traffic Control Supervisors and Senior Air Traffic Control Officers who may be ask to perform the task of Shift Supervisor and Aeronautical Informational Service Staff.

Prerequisite
- Completion of Air Traffic Control Assistant/Basic Induction, ICAO 051 course, ICAO 052 course and ICAO 055 course.
