Instrument Landing System (ILS) Fundamentals Course
Introduction
- This is a five-days course covering important features of the ILS fundamental principles.
Objectives
- This course will ensure the ability to understand and to discuss the subject matter intelligently in order to represent and act upon certain objects and events. The student will be ready to receive the On-the-Job training required to perform independent preventive maintenance work on ILS systems. Flight inspectors will enhance their skills reading measurement reports and understanding of unusual effects.

Course Content
- Introduction to ILS, runway systems and categories
- Localiser and glide path basic principles
- ILS modulation theory, generation of CSB and SBO giving DDM and CDI
- The airborne equipment and operational use of ILS
- Antenna theory, radiation patterns and design of localiser and glide path antenna systems
- Beam Bend Potential and adverse reflection objects causing bends, ICAO Specifications, monitoring of localiser and glide path
- Critical and sensitive areas. Flight inspection procedures and ground measurements
- Basic principles of bend analysis
Prerequisite
- Basic understanding of mathematics, trigonometry, and radio systems at engineering Level.
- It is also well suited for those who have been working within the aeronautical services for some time, having a reasonable knowledge in radio technical systems.
